Something different : People of Papua

This is a collection of pictures taken during 3 trips i made to the Western part of New Guinea, Papua Barat as the Indonesians call it. Navigating the maze of river channels that run though the lowland Asmat country we made stops in countless villages and were often invited into the communal long house where some of the portraits were taken. Further upstream, we reached the Korowai country where semi-nomadic tribes still live off the forest, despite growing pressure from fast developing Indonesia to settle them in villages. In 5, 10 years, forest clearance for palm oil plantations and other mining projects will extirpate them forever from their traditional habitat and lifestyle, and they will join the crowded civilized world but at its lowest echelon, living in slums and making a miserable income from a few mundane jobs.
